Recently, it has become more and more difficult to imagine the contents of animation works just by looking at the “title”.
Also, the number of title names with strong impact is increasing.
The world of animation is a world of rivalry and competition, and it is difficult to keep track of how many animations are created each year.
The viewer is also using scarce extra time, so it’s hard to choose.
In the midst of all this, I came across yet another anime with a fun, unfamiliar worldview that tickled my curiosity!
It’s called “The Apothecary Diaries”

Impressions (this is how the world looks like)
As for Chinese-style historical anime, I have watched “Three Kingdoms, Kingdom, and Hoshin Engi(Soul Hunter)” etc.
Some of the more unusual examples include “Ya boy Kongming”…(not a historical anime).
This time, “The Apothecary Diaries” was a Chinese-style historical animation with unusual tastes, different from the above works!
In Chinese-style historical animation, the story is often centered on the outside of the palace (warfare) and the inside of the palace (intrigue and scheming).
The axis of this “The Apothecary Diaries” is probably the same, but the story is not a “bloody, cut-and-paste” heavy animated work, but more like a daily life in the palace.
Impressions (female protagonist with a rare personality)
The main character Mao Mao is a medicine man and has a science girl-like personality.
Maybe I’ll get along with this guy↓
Unlike today, the job of a pharmacist at this time was not clearly categorized, and sometimes he/she performed medical procedures as a doctor.
Maomao is also involved in the treatment of the patient, and will not only make a diagnosis based on communication with the patient, but will also take into account facial expressions and gestures, as well as the surrounding environment, diet, and rhythm of life.
Maybe it’s the influence of Mao Mao’s master, but I admire his keen sense of insight.
She is able to get around the unreasonableness of being unable to devote herself to medical treatment without taking into consideration the unique interactions in the palace, but she manages to do so amicably and with the care that only a woman can provide.(There are tense moments at times, but I guess she is thinking about what will happen later.)
And she not only works as a pharmacist, but also resolves events in the palace.
Maybe that guy will get along too↓
I worked in the Hanamachi district, and I think that helped me develop a perspective on people.
In a sense, the people in the hanamachi district are a place where a person’s true nature can be revealed in an unspoken way.
As a result, I believe that I have learned how to solve the problems in the palace.
Impressions (appearance that changes drastically)
Mao Mao, the main character, sometimes adds color to his appearance in order to perform his duties in the palace.
This is also one of the showcases of the anime “The Apothecary Diaries” , which shows us the direction and expressions that say, “This is what real beauty is like.”
But she doesn’t seem to realize that she has the looks to attract others.
At the end
This comment focused only on the main character.
The story gets more and more exciting as it progresses.
The story gradually connects the dots, but I think it’s also fun to watch while guessing.
There are also glimpses of Chinese-style historical palace buildings in between the stories.
As a former construction worker myself, I was looking at that as well.
Now that you can easily “stop and back” the video, you may want to still and watch that as well.
(Though it’s a bit of a refraction in terms of the way I see it.)
If you are in a rut or just want to discover something new, this is the anime for you!
