I saw “Godzilla Minus One”.

After all, works by filmmakers of the generation that grew up watching special effects are good.

Director Hideaki Anno of “Shin Godzilla” and Takashi Yamazaki of “Godzilla Minus One” both enjoy this film with ease!

The director’s personality is reflected in both films, and even though they are the same Godzilla movie, they are different from each other.

I was worried that the series of films would get stuck in a rut, but they are both good quality films that don’t make me feel dewy-eyed.

The setting is postwar Japan

Gojira, a creature that is driving people who are struggling to make a living while the wounds of war are still not healed.

Godzilla this time is such a “nasty guy (monster)”

At this time, Japan did not yet have an army (legally or militarily).

How on earth are we going to cope with this challenge?

In times when there is nothing, wisdom, and the source of wisdom, people, are the only weapons.

We have an abundance of things in our lives now, and we have the financial resources to do so.

But since postwar Japan lacked both the essential “goods and funds,” it was what we would now call an “impossible game”(Japanese buzzwords).

But the way they work together to solve the problems one by one shows the viewers their “resilience and greed for life”.

I feel that the “vitality” of the people of this era is scarce for us today.

People after the war

The term “postwar people” may be one word, but in reality they are the same people who lived before, during, and after the war.

People living today have a historical sense and think in divisions.

But for those who lived through that time, it was yesterday, before now.

People living after the war have memories of the war, and they are still living with them after the war.

This feeling is conveyed in the film “Godzilla Minus One” in several key places.

Sometimes it’s hard to understand, but I don’t think it’s right to try to understand it all.

The director’s ability to make this sensitive state of mind not too prominent in the film, but also to make it work as an entertaining film, is a real feat.

Main character : Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki)

The main character is played by Ryunosuke Kamiki.

Some of his past works include the drama “SPEC”, the movie “Rurouni Kenshin”, and the anime “Weathering with You”.

In my image, his roles tend to be those of “a man with talent, but with a dangerous quality that is somehow ambiguous or mixed between right and wrong”.

His role as Koichi Shikishima this time was also in line with that image of him.

At the end

…This is just a guess, but I thought that director Takashi Yamazaki might have seen the animated film “The Wings of Honneamise”.

The “Shinden,” a fighter plane that appears in the film, and a front-winged fighter plane of the same structure also appears in “The Wings of Honneamise”.

Other “Nixie tubes” are shown for a few seconds in the play “Godzilla Minus One”.

This is also depicted in “The Wings of Honneamise”

In the conversation between Shikishima and Oishi, the light and shadow of the window frame are projected on the shoji, and the shape of the window frame is a cross pattern.

The fact that it is projected in the center of the image suggests that the composition is intentional.

This direction can be seen in a scene from Neon Genesis Evangelion, a film by Hideaki Anno.

The animated film “Wings of Honneamise” has Hideaki Anno on the staff.

Although this animation work is 37 years old, given the age of director Takashi Yamazaki, it is not surprising that he has seen it.

Both directors are close in age, and their works may have influenced each other, creating a synergy effect.
